Happy Monday to you! Iâm offering two bits of updates regarding my podcast, Niche to Meet You.
First update:
I spent yesterday afternoon at whatâs called a âSwap Meet.â Ever heard of it? Itâs like a flea market/yard sale for car parts, except vendors show up with clothes and Pokemon cards and all sorts of odds and ends. But the main draw are the car parts. Tables and tables of assorted doo-dads related to automobiles both new and old. I was there to visit my new friend Richard Blankenshipâsought-after vintage car radio restorerâas he walked me around.
Rick is a steadfast member of my local Waffle House morning community. Iâm there every Wednesday morning and sometimes I want to sit by myself in quiet and read, but sometimesâas an extroverted-yet-isolating-needing-workerâI want to visit with folks. He and I met at Waffle House a few weeks ago when I was in a talkative mood. We few weeks later we had a âformalâ interview in a booth over an All Star Meal for the podcast. Itâll be coming to you soon.
Hereâs a preview of what Rick does from his own YouTube channel:
Second update:
Iâve been overwhelmed by the feedback Iâm hearing about this first mini-series on Warhammer 40,000.
From people who know podcasts, Iâm hearing that it sounds like a RadioLab show, or This American Life. đ€Ż For this nerdy multimedia storyteller who has spent years LOVING and learning from shows like these (fun fact: the first show I listened to consistently was All Songs Considered in 2010), itâs encouraging to know my own workâcompletely independently produced, funded, and promotedâis resonating in the same way these seminal shows do. Itâs huge. Seriously, theyâve got teamsâTEAMSâof full-time producers and editors. Iâm just me and my friend Chris as an editor.Â
You know whatâs better though?
The âHammerheadsââthe ones whose hobby is being featured in this first seriesâfeel like their âthingâ is being shared in a way theyâre proud of and rings true. Thatâs a âside questâ for this show: to humanize folks, giving accurate, sincere outsider views into a world which most people have never even heard of.Â
I hope to tell many, MANY more stories like #WarhammerâŠlittle-known hobbies where people are finding belonging and meaning. Itâs an honor and so, SO fun.
If thereâs something you think I should cover, just reply and tell me what it is.
Three episodes down, at LEAST one more to go.
Weâll see what happens.
